🌍 “Small acts, big changes"

This month’s Rainbow for Africa UK newsletter is a little extra special — today is the International Day of Charity, a time to celebrate kindness and remember how powerful it is when people come together to care for one another.

At Rainbow for Africa UK, we see every day how your generosity changes lives, and today we want to celebrate you. This issue is filled with stories of hope and impact made possible by your support, and a reminder that even the smallest act of kindness can brighten someone’s world.

POCUS 2025 Review

We have successfully completed 2 out of 4 POCUS (Point Of Care UltraSound) training schools led by R4AUK and R4A Kenya volunteers in collaboration with Masinde Muliro University, Kakamega.

So far, over 80 clinicians have been trained since September 2024, each with the potential to reach and support a large number of patients in their communities. This ripple effect means that the knowledge shared today will continue to save and improve lives for years to come.

We have two more to go!

✅ March 3rd-8th : POCUS I Training
✅June 30th-July 10th : POCUS II Training
🟨Sept. 27th-Oct. 3rd : POCUS III Training
🟨Dec. 1st-5th : POCUS IV Training

All upcoming events can be viewed from our activities calendar.

Donation of Portable Ultrasound Probes to Vihiga County

In a landmark gesture of support for maternal and community health, the R4AUK and R4A Kenya teams donated two portable ultrasound probes to the County of Vihiga. The handover was received by H.E. Dr. Wilber Ottichilo, Governor of Vihiga County. This contribution will enhance diagnostic capacity across the region, bringing lifesaving imaging closer to patients who need it most.

Sioport Free Medical Camp

Hundreds of patients from Sioport and surrounding areas attended a free medical camp at Sioport Sub-County Hospital. R4AUK and R4A Kenya volunteers provided free medical consultations and diagnostic services in this underserved rural community. The camp created a vital opportunity for residents, many of whom rarely access specialist care to receive timely assessments and interventions.

Mothers' Voices

Mothers who received free antenatal ultrasounds from midwives and nurses trained at the R4AUK POCUS School shared heartfelt gratitude. Many expressed how these scans empowered them with knowledge about their pregnancies, helping them prepare for safe deliveries and, in some cases, revealing complications that required special attention. Their stories highlight the transformative impact of point-of-care ultrasound in rural maternal health.

I come from Kinyanya village. This is my second ultrasound, but this one was done very quickly and efficiently. I’m very grateful because I received the service and it was free. I want to thank the donors and encourage them to continue supporting these services for people. Honestly, I almost didn’t come, but my neighbor convinced me — and I’m glad she did.
I came for an ultrasound. First of all, I want to thank you for bringing this service here. Many of us cannot afford it — for example, with my third child, I never had the chance to get an ultrasound.
As women, we thank this organisation for bringing this service to us.
It helped me because I didn’t know anything about my baby. Now I have been informed about how my child is doing. I am very grateful for this service being brought close to us. Because we can access it easily, in comparison. Previously, we had to incur costs to travel far to get this service. I thank R4AUK for bringing us this service and I also urge them to extend this service to other areas where it has not yet reached, so that other mothers can benefit.

The Faces Behind Our Mission: A POCUS Trainer’s Story

A short story from Helen Payne,
R4AUK Volunteer Ultrasound Practitioner

I was fortunate to visit Kenya in December 2024 with Rainbow for Africa UK, volunteering to help train local healthcare professionals in ultrasound scanning to help in identifying women with high-risk pregnancies.

The training covered confirming fetal heartbeat, assessing fetal presentation (breech, cephalic, transverse, oblique), and taking fetal biometry measurements (head and abdomen circumference, and femur length) to estimate the gestation of the pregnancy. We also taught them how to identify placental position to exclude placenta praevia. Knowing the placental position is vitally important in identifying a high risk pregnancy.

Undetected placental issues put mothers at high risk of haemorrhage during delivery. In Kenya, emergency care is free, and identifying such risks allows women to be placed on a high-risk pathway for safe delivery. Teaching placental assessment is simple but vital, and its use will save lives.

My time in Kenya was joyful and inspiring. The students were eager to learn and apply their new skills, showing how collaboration with local communities can greatly impact patients and dedicated healthcare professionals working with limited resources. Donated equipment allows the work to continue, and we remain available to support the teams from the UK.

I look forward to returning to Kenya in December 2025 to continue this important work, and I am deeply grateful to all the donors whose generosity makes it possible for us as trainers to support local healthcare teams.

Coming Up: Our 10 Year Anniversary!

In April 2026, Rainbow For Africa UK will proudly celebrate its 10th anniversary. This milestone is not only a time to reflect on the impact we’ve made together over the past decade, but also an opportunity to honour the strong partnerships and friendships that have grown along the way. It will truly be a moment to celebrate our shared journey and the work still ahead.

✨ Keep an eye out — exciting details and celebrations are on the way!

We’re also expanding our network of ultrasound trainers and clinicians in both the UK and Kenya for 2026 and beyond.
